Kaprun Maiskogel Mountain WalksFrom family-friendly leisurely walks to challenging hikes
Looking for the ultimate family-friendly walk in the mountains?
Or perhaps a more intensive hike through mountain forests?
Searching for a mountain destination with paths full of lush alpine meadows, grazing cows, fresh mountain air, beautiful vistas and Alms to enjoy the local cuisine?
The Maiskogel, in the heart of Kaprun, is the starting point for several hiking routes- from leisurely to a full-scale ascent of the Kitzsteinhorn.
The Mais Hut Path (route #25) is suitable for families and children’s prams. The trail, along level pathways, leads to you to Alms and Gasthäuser sunny terraces that are the ideal spots to sit back and relax while you enjoy the valley and mountain vistas.
Deviating off this path, are several more challenging trails.
Starting at the Kaprun Centre (parking available) take a pleasant ride on the MK Maiskogelbahn up to the second and last stop of the Gondola. The hiking paths start from the mountain terminal ( 1570 m).
The routes for all trails are marked with yellow signs.
The Mais Hut Path begins in a westerly direction toward Unterbergalm (1570 m), a lovely Alpine hut that serves delicious food.
The Dürlinger family has owned the hut since 1830, and the 214 hectares are still actively used for grazing. Look closely and see you if can find the cows grazing high up in the alpine pastures. The Dürlinger family make their own cheeses, butter and buttermilk which you can buy from the Unterbergalm.
From Unterbergalm, there is an easy route that continues along level path in a northerly direction, gently climbing to the Alpengasthaus Glocknerblick (1670 m).
Alternatively, in front of the wooden hut at Unterbergalm, you will find a path leading through the larch forest.
The Alpengasthaus Glocknerblick serves delicious, typical Pinzgauer specialities enjoyed on the patio with fantastic panoramic views extending from the Watzmann in the Bavarian Alps to the Groβglockner.
From the Gasthaus, a level path leads downhill to the Maiskogel Alm Ranch (1540 m).
For a more challenging route, you will find the narrow trail behind the Alpengasthaus Glocknerblick which weaves through the forest to the Maiskogel Alm Ranch.
The sunny terrace of the Maiskogel Alm Ranch offers views from the Steinernes Meer range to the Hohe Tauern Mountains. The kids will also love the petting zoo with its resident sheep, hens, donkey and goats. From the Maiskogel Alm, it is a short walk downhill back to the MK Maiskogelbahn for the descent into Kaprun.
For an alternative walk through the forest, take the trail marked Maiskogelweg- Durch die Wald (through the forest). The path (Route #35) winds its way along a marginally steep track where you will arrive at the Stanger lift station (1.137 m). From here you can take the Gondola to the village or continue on route #35 to arrive back in the village.
The last descent to the village of Kaprun is at 4:00 pm (16:00)
Check the weather before you go on any hikes. The weather in the mountains can change quickly. Make sure you bring water and suitable attire.
Alternative hiking paths

The path begins ~50 min uphill from the Alpengasthaus Glocknerblick .
